After market warranties

About a year ago the engine in my 986 facelift 2.7 dropped a valve, and it's only now that an M96.23 out of a similar crashed vehicle has come up for sale.

Of course, to avoid a repetition of another large bill, I'd like to investigate a warranty. Does anyone have recommendations of warranty companies to avoid, or warranty companies to embrace ?

Hi, I have used Warranty Direct for my previous Mini Cooper S, and my Boxster 3.2 S. I too was worried about Warranty companies reputations and whether they would pay out, from what I could find they seemed pretty good. I have not had anything go wrong (touch wood...) on the Boxster as yet, but my previous mini did have issues and I claimed well over the yearly premium. Key points with WD is that they cover cars up to 120k miles, 10 years old. And seem reasonable in their claims dept. I checked if things like IMS etc on the Boxster are covered and their documents confirm this . Their weasel words are not too onerous . They also importantly cover wear and tear, once a car gets to 60k, they then start reducing the percentage of parts costs dowen to 50% at 120k. However labour (and I have main dealer rates cover) is 100% even at 120k . Of course other people may have had issues with them, , but I have stuck with them and signed up to a 3 year warranty with discount on my Boxster as I plan to keep her for some time. I also looked at Warranty Wise, who also look like they cover wear and tear too.... I will also be covering my current mini with them too. Good luck. Cheers Chris

I put a warranty on my 2005 987 after the OPC warranty expired this month. Went with WMS following a recommendation from a well respected Indy who I intend on using in the future. It's got a £5k claim limit but to be honest if the worst were to happen this provides a lump towards a repair bill.

Careful what you are doing! I took a three year warranty when I purchased my 997 in August. In December I had an engine failure. The bores on 6,5,3 are worn as they all do but warranty did not cover. The cover was all singing all dancing top cover of everything including bores and Pistons. The small print in the terms and conditions just about knocked every claim on the head! I now have a rebuild bill which I am not happy about in thousands and nobody wants to know. REad the small print and don't get caught! Mike

Not sure whether it's changed much, but a few years ago warranties were exactly what they said, Mechanical breakdown warranties. Usually this meant that cover stated was for "sudden and unexpected" mechanical breakdown. This always excluded wear and tear, and also any service items. Other things to watch for in small print is 'limits per claim'. Quite often it is worded so you think you are covered for say £5k but that is the maximum amount in the warranty life or per year. It may have a limit per claim of a much lesser amount. Also some do not cover any consumables/service items when a claim is made so you could get a bill for things like oil, filters, anti freeze, plugs etc etc
