Age old oil question

I'm a first time Porsche owner with a 2006 Cayman S. I've been through the internet and looked at the manual etc and whilst I'm in limits I'm using what feels like a fair bit of oil (I'm using about 1ltr of Mobile1 every 1000m) and because I've never had a car that does that, I'm a bit paranoid.

It is really OK? I've bought from a reputable garage and they assure me all is OK.

Am I right to be concerned? My 10 year old TT didn't use a drop.

I love my Porsche, just a bit concerned.

Any help is welcomed and I appreciate this is a well trodden topic.

Alan,

The Technical Data section of the driver's manual for my Gen2 Cayman S states engine oil consumption as "up to 1.5 litres/1,000 km", so you're well within that margin.

Having said that my car hasn't used any oil in the last 2 years - and that includes three track days - so presumably it can be very variable. You don't state the mileage of the car and that will of course have an effect on the oil useage as all moving parts wear eventually. If you're not billowing clouds of smoke I wouldn't be too concerned. Just keep an eye on the oil consumption and if it starts increasing significantly then that's the time to further investigate the source of the problem, where a compression test and borescope examination will provide some useful data.

Thanks Jeff

It's done 46k, so pretty low for the age. I get a small puff on start up but that sounds common But nothing else.

I'll monitor it and take your borescope before the warranty runs out.

cheers and appreciate the help.

Allan
