Ageing of winter tyres

Sorry for taking us all crashing back into the cold and wet... (not literally hopefully)

I see that the extended warranty will not be granted to cars with winter tyres over 4 years old.

What are people's experience with winter tyre ageing? I ask as I can see that my mileage on the winters will likely take them beyond 4 years - not worried re warranty (summer renewal...) but more as to the efficacy of the tyres.

Regardless of what the Porsche extended warranty system says I believe that 5 years is an acceptable life for a tyre, beyond that the grips drops. I am using Pirelli winter tyres and only did about 3000 miles on them last winter, however although their wear rate is very good, as they should be changed once tread depth is down to 3mm I doubt if they will actually last beyond 4 years never mind 5. This is a reminder to us all to check the dates on "newly" supplied tyres.
