Agh! Water pump leaking after 3 1/2 years and 6k miles!

While I was fixing an oil leak (new oil cooler lines £££) I found a coolant drip which I've finally traced to the water pump. With the system under pressure it's weeping out from under the pulley (plus a separate drip from the radiator).
I fitted a brand new Laso water pump 3 1/2 years ago, so this is a bit of a surprise. Belts were tensioned as per the factory procedure with the tool. I can only think I made a mistake and got them too tight (perhaps the engine was too cold, I did it in a shed in the middle of winter).
So I don't think any choice but to do the water pump again.

Sorry to hear it Rob, earlirr in the year i had noticed whilst taking advance of a 30% off at ECP they have 2 different pumps (suppliers) - with discount i think it only cost around £80, think compared to the other pump was £200?

I picked one up but havent fitted it yet so unfortunately couldn't tell you if it was any good... but maybe someone else has tried one? Suspect you dont want to be doing this job again in 3 years time!

Well I did a marathon last Saturday and changed the water pump and also the leaking radiator. Old pump leaking without a doubt from the seal, steady drip when the system is pressurised. I've found my new pressure tester also makes filling the system much easier and quicker.
I think my tensioner spring must be out of adjustment and is getting the belt far too tight. I have read you should be able to (just about) turn the water pump pulley by hand and that is not the case. I've borrowed the tool from the club to see what it says.

Is it possible the old Porsche instructions are no longer relevant as the belt materials have improved over the years? The old belt never needed retensioning, I checked it a few times and it was always tight. Perhaps the setting for a used belt is all that is needed as they no longer stretch? Does anyone actually use the tool these days?

That's how I tension my 944 timing belt on a cold engine, but I don't think the official procedure states that. Having to change the water pump every 2nd belt change is a nonsense, caused by the belt tension being over tight when the block/head expands.

The tensioning tools get loadned out pretty much all the time, so someone's using them. I think to be fair it's mostly Tref as he does so many miles in his!

Driving only 6k miles in 3.5 years is asking for troubles.
I would not be surprised if the problem reappears with the new pump if you keep driving your car that little.

That was pretty much my first thought. Granted that is 6K miles more than mine and these cars are never happier than when they are being used regularly.
