Ailing 944 with engine cut our problems

This is a fairly urgent call for help for my badly failing and ailing 1985 944 Lux 2.5l (C426 NHJ). You can just see her
in the R23 report in July edition of the magazine.

She recently went through the MOT with few problems, brake pipe, wiper blades, nothing major. A few months ago
we had some issues with the monitors on the crankshaft and then a spark plug but all resolved and was running well.

Regrettably it seems to be a chapter of one thing after another having suffered damage to one of the alloys (front
passenger wheel - pot hole) that is not repairable. The final straw has now occurred, coming home Wednesday she
was running Ok on the A27 through Worthing when there was a sudden loss of power but was able to glide gracefully
into a well positioned bus stop. The breakdown service came out but was unable to do any immediate repair, thinking
the problem was with the coil. The car has been recovered and looked by the regular garage, they have done all the
recent work without any problems but the problem is still unresolved, coil seems ok, fuel pump seems ok, they can
get it running but keeps stopping/cutting out after a short while. They have questioned whether she had an
immobiliser (in the past) that might be causing the cut outs but I do not have that information. It now looks like quite
a lot of investigation work is necessary and no guarantee of a complete recovery and into the bargain it now looks like
the head gasket will need to be changed fairly soon.

I have now got to a situation that having pumped quite a bit of money into the car over the last 2 years it now looks
like this is close to terminal.

If I were mechanically or electrically trained/skilled to some degree I might be interested in garaging and looking at
myself but this is beyond my limited skills.

Working on the assumption this is terminal, this is a car with a lot of good parts, original red leather seats, 4 good
tyres and more as I have the records of work done whilst in our possession.

What do you think is the best way of making the most of this vehicle? Any advice gratefully received for this car lover
but no technician.

I feel that if you're driving a car of this type and age, you need to develop at least a little mechanical and electrical knowledge. Otherwise you really are at the mercy of garages - and missing out on a large amount of fun and satisfaction that can be gained from fixing/improving things.

From my limited experience of these cars, I would suspect your ECU - and the easiest way to confirm or deny that would be to find someone near you with the same model and just do a temporary swap to see if that fixes it. You have an 85 car, but is it a square or oval dash model ?
