AIR BAG SENSOR

A 993 owning neighbour needs to change his Air Bag sensor. He was advised that a 996 part number 996.618.219.01 will suffice and has obtained this. He is keen to know what if any PC or plug in re-configeration may be required when the plug in sensor is fitted as a replacement.
Our local independant says that he does not have the programme to cover this - any ideas or is this a main agent job?
Regards
Robert

I'd be a bit surprised if the 993 airbag system is sophisticated enough to know what programing is let alone need it. But I'd be more worried about using a 996 part numbered item which more than likely is up for programming.

Would it not be easier just to get the right (993) part?

Is this the g-force sensor?

hi,im pretty sure you cant buy the 993 one anymore its been replaced by the 996 part numbered one,but its the same item and does the same job. If you replace the unit,(it simply plugs in,though it is a bit hard to remove the old unit as it was fixed with a shear type nuts) just make sure you dont switch on the ignition with the unit removed and it should work fine without having to have the airbag light reset. In curious, how does the garage know the unit is at fault if they do not have the diagnostic tools to read the airbag ecu, they are normally very reliable and can be reset.According to porsche they are good for three crash events. i.e you can crash three times, just replace the airbags and all you need to do is reset the airbag ecu(which also contains the sensor) on the diagnostic tool with out having to fit a new unit. Though if anyone manages to crash three times in the same porsche, they are probly better of using a bus ;-)
