Air Bags

Hi, this is my first posting on the forum. Could anyone tell me if drivers and / or passenger airbags were offered on the 944? If so from what year?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Were they offered in other markets, Fen? When did airbags start being fitted to other cars? The 944 must have finished production 14-15 yrs ago, cant remember if airbags were even invented then!? [8|]

Certainly the US 944s had airbags. I 'think' it was with the introduction of the oval dash but I'm not sure.

What I am sure about is that the airbag wheel is even uglier than the lozenge one we have [:'(]

Aside from the fact there is nothing wrong with the lozenge I think that's nearly right. I'm 99% sure there was no airbag square dash 944 (probably no airbag 924 either as it shared the dash). I don't believe the very first oval dash cars in the US had airbags either however; I suspect the dash was re-engineered later to have them, probably quite soon after - maybe for '87?. They didn't bother to re-engineer the RHD cars for airbags until the 968. I'm not even sure if the RHD 968 had a passenger bag.

But then, of course, pre-oval and oval dash had the same original steering wheel, so your answer is probably right even if the logic is slightly askew.

I think they brought in the airbags option (in the US) with the Turbo; I certainly remember reading somewhere that the Turbo was the first production car in the world to offer passenger airbags. Paul's right about the 'buttock' wheel, it's horrid, but I have to disagree with the disparaging marks about the lozenge!

Yeah, big up the lozenge and boo to the buttock (first time I've heard that but boy is it accurate [:D])
