Just in case anyone is thinking about updating the air-con to modern R134A gas, I have recently had it done. Not out of choice, naturally, but because the old R12 gas had leaked away via a worn fitting. Now, R12 is illegal nowadays, hence the conversion, which cost me only £180.00 + VAT, and takes about 1 hour.
Cheaper than I thought, but all it took was replacing the 2 bleed valves, and inserting a bottle of ' magic liquid' (he did tell me, but I forgot - it could be the lubricating oil that was in the R12), which is a once off fix. So, next time, it will just need re-gassing.
Cheap fix, for a porker, and, I assume, would apply to any air-con of that era.
