Air Con Evaporator

The big bad news I received last Friday from JZ / Steve Angell was that the Evaporator and Expansion Valve have gone. Another big bill to add to the steering rack that went in April.

Anyway, given that this is a "petrol tank out" job, does anyone know whether it is worth doing anything else under there while JZ are spending a days labour on the car?

John M, given other forum posts, I know you have had the evaporator replaced - were you advised other work too?

Cheers,

Shane

That's bad news for you. Once the tank , evaporator and half the dashboard are removed there is little else left ! and nothing extra was done on mine.

Obviously JZ are top notch but it might be worth reminding them that you don't want any rattles - I made it clear to the firm who did mine and they were extra particular - some corroded retained bolts sheared and they carefully bonded in new ones overnight so everything was secure.

Mine was a v good job and you would never know it's been apart and A/C still cold after 18 months so it's well worth doing.

Incredibly my steering rack also failed in Feb this year and I got over my fear of bigger jobs and took it off and got it reconditioned myself. OPC wanted over £1k to do this and her indoors was not impressed !!

I had JZ sort the evaporator in my 964 last year and, as John said, there's not much left in there once the firewall and tank are out. The fans can often become noisy and are a real PITA to get to without taking much of the heating system out so it may be worth mentioning it and get them to check them out if they've been at all noisy in the past. I don't think it's a practical solution to lubricate them but JZ would have a better idea.

When my car was in I got so fed up waiting for it I got them to install a set of H&R lowered springs too - but that's hardly a "while we're in there" job!!!

My A/C is still good after almost a year so I can vouch for JZ's effectiveness!!

Regards

Dave

My air cons not been working for a wee while now and have been scared to suss out costs. What kind of money are we talking about for a new evaporator and/or expansion valve fitted?

My evaporator was done under warranty but it took one aircon specialist nearly two days to do the job so must be £1k at least with parts. Mine also had faulty pipes and condenser but that's another story !!

Thanks John, I've just put new discs on the front and the mot comes up in a couple of months, so I think I'll leave it 'till next spring.

Thanks for the info John & Dave.

Clyde, the evaporator is £552 + VAT and the expansion valve is £99 + VAT. Bought from my local OPC as a stock order I get the 10% discount. It's a day's labour + regas + dye - JZ have quoted £584 + VAT for this. .... not alot of change from £1,400.
