Air con.........How cold?

day1zero

New member
Just had my Carrera re-gassed there is a noticeable change in temp.....however, i am slightly disappointed as to how cold it actually gets, my other car...sorry in advance Volvo V70 (family thing) is absolutley baltic an max aircon..whereas the Porsche just manages a comfortable temp reduction...

Is this the norm?

Many thanks

They vary, mine will keep the interior comfortable on a very hot day but never becomes cold. Often use fan setting 3 to start and will hold reduced temp on fan 2.

My daily driver (Merc) will get v cold and my wife's Audi TT can go to Arctic.

Maybe doing something wrong then..........I press the two "snowflake" style buttons in on the right hand side of the heater controls and the blower appears to be on max without using the blower settings..also press the re-circ button the left.

Is this the way to do it?....

When I had the a/c re-gassed on my old 993RS, the operater had the fan on full, recirculation mode on to stop warm air getting into the system......the minimum temp we saw with the temp probe positioned in the dashcoard air vent was +4 degrees C.

I thought that was cold enough [&:]

The top snowflake button turns on the a/c compressor and you can then use the fan settings to control the airflow. The temperature knob must be set on its lowest setting.

The lower snowflake button turns a/c to maximum cool and overides any other settings.

If the ambient air temperature outside is very high you can use the re-circulate button so the a/c continuously cools the cabin air only.

Hope this helps - it's all in the manual if you have one.

You should be able to get about +6degC at the centre vents depending on the outside temperature. However, it will never match the airflow, distribution and temps of a modern saloon like a V70.

My experience of 993 a/c has been very good whilst living in Athens. I've used my car daily on the drive to work, sat in an open to the sun car park all day and driven home in regualr temperatures of 36-38 deg.

The A/C keeps up no problem with these ambients, when it hit +40 deg for a few days it did struggle a bit but this was mainly due to the car sitting in the sun all day.

My system has was recharged in the spring and still blows nice and cold.

My aircon deteriorated quiet significantly over the last 2 years. I first had the condenser replaced (it disintegrated) and then had a leak from the Evaporator behind the dash. It was an (expensive) pig of a job (petrol tank out) but the air con now works a dream ... I don't have a thermometer to measure the temperature though!

Talking to specialists over the last few months, it appears a high number of evaporators are being replaced in 993's .... the next thing to go is likely to be the air con pipes along the near side of the car. Oh joy.

Not a 993, but just had my 965 aircon rebuilt. I shopped around for parts. The cheapest (OEM) bits were in the US but some uncertainty about left hand drive components being suitable for our rhd. For fair price components in UK I found Coolit in Dorset the best. But watch out some expensive indep dealers won't let you use your own parts! So I ended up getting all the work done by Coollit as well, and I'm in London. No affiliation, just fair credit when due.

I have everything done at JZ now, but they sub out the regassing and checking to a guy called Steve Angell, tel 07884 008800, website www.aircool.biz. (when he not on holiday!) who is very good.

I bought the parts from Hatfield OPC and got the 10% discount (because JZ couldn't give me the 10%) .... but then JZ charged me an two extra hour's labour so I didn't gain in the end.

Cost prices were Evaporator (964 573 901 00) £551.90 + VAT and Valve (928 573 123 05) £98.67 + VAT ... great part numbers eh! You can also see why I went for the 10% discount. 10 hours of labour + £130 for the regas and dye. Grand total just below £1,500. Ouch.

I paid £329 plus vat for my evaporator, receiver dryer (valve) £48, worth shopping around!
I had lots else done inc. heater motors. Tank out job like Shane's.

Thanks chaps. - I love this forum. - I will venture for the hard and painful option of getting everything replaced & fixed some time in April before the heat wave, although my eyes will be on the weather. ;-)

Good to receive feed back about the work JZ do, comforting to know people have had this work done by them and experience has been positive ... I will be sending her there to get fixed & ask around about parts / prices etc...

Derek,
that was the point I was making. JZ wouldn't let me get the cheaper parts, I had to buy from them or they wouldn't guarantee the work! In the end I got the whole job done elsewhere.
As the saying goes, you pays your money and take your chances...
Good luck.

Aircon all fixed and working now. Work done by JZMachtech & no problems through the Summer months... Seems I can have the AC & the heating on at the same time "" a type of climate control, which means it will get used during the Winter months too. I can't remember the exact costing behind the work; however it wasn't far off the above quotes. Thanks for your help.

To make a point. My car had no aircon when bought. Portia craft refilled the system as part of their sales service, which then took about two, or could be less months, to empty itself again. I then had it checked by an OPC here in France and they refilled and put in a fluid to detect leaks, this was then left for a week and they checked for leaks. Non found. They then topped up and put in a special gas/product to lubricate the seals. It was very expensive by comparison with taking the car to an aircon specialist.
I leave the compressor switched in all the time now, as with my other cars. Car is used only about once a fortnight and 18mths later it is still functioning. I believe, but am open to correction, that if the unit functions all the time there is less chance of the seals drying out. You can always add some heat. I wait to be shot down.

John, what you say is generally correct for almost any mechanical unit and based on my experience definitely true for cars and car systems.
Sometimes we think that if we do not use the car or certain car systems (incl. aircon, lights etc.) that they will stay longer - wrong! Statistically this is always oposit...
