Air con noises

Was tinkering around my car this evening while the engine and A/C was running. From the outside I could hear a periodic (maybe every minute or so) Pshhhh noise coming from the front nearside I think i.e. like a vent to atmosphere dump valve, but much quieter - I only heard it as I had my head low down on that side of the car. Is the A/C system supposed to do this? I got the system charged about 2 months ago and it is still going strong (was nice and chilly on my way home tonight) but it has lost charge quite quickly in the past so i'm wondering if this Pshhhh noise is a symptom of a leak or something not functioning correctly.
