Air Con Pump removal

I need to replace my air con pump as the clutch went. Anyone got a guide for removing it? Any way to bleed out the gas etc? I'm not sure what's going to happen when I remove all the connections :).

You should get the system 'discharged' by a garage with a/c equiptment. This is the first stage when the re-gas the system so anywhere which advertises this should be able to do it.

Having said that, when i did the same job on my old car i just undid a connection on the pump and then left the area for a while for the gas to disperse. There's a load of flourescent green oil in there too which isn't very nice :(

If the connections are the same then it's sealed by o-rings. These should be changed for new ones or it'll leak (don't ask how i know this!).

Well its off and the new one is back on, what a pain getting the bolts back in! I was surprised but hardly any gas came out, it was like opening a can of coke. Didn't see any green oil either. Are there any issues with leaving it de-gassed for long periods? Maybe having moisture in there could be an issue.

Yes, there are issues with leaving the system uncharged. A/C systems don't like moisture. The black cannister behind the o/s light is a can of dessicant which I replaced at the last regas. Moisture in the system massively reduces the effectiveness of the system and you can obviously get corrosion. The vacuum drawdown prior to a regas is not primarily for leak detection as many think it is, it is primarily to evacuate the system from any moisture. If I were you I'd get the system re-gassed as soon as possible if no you could be looking at replacement of the dessicant cannister which is about £105 if I remember rightly and a regas is circa £50.

Thanks for the info Scott. Does your car have a knock sensor btw? I didn't think it did but I read on rennlist all 944T's have them.
