Air con 'radiators'

I've just looked at a 2000 'x' S. One of the air conditioning radiators/condensers is leaking. I understand that leaves and other debris can either puncture them or, because they cannot escape begin to rot and cause corrosion. Any experience of repairs? Costs? Any comments welcome.

Hi, I had the same problem.

My air con stopped working so I took it to a local air con specialist who told me they would recharge the system using a trace die so any leaks would show up.

Half way through the process there was a massive gush of gas from the front right radiator and lots of green die, also a smirk from the mechanic you need a new radiator sir !! Cost at this point £70 for the recharge and £20 for the trace die + vat.

The front bumper was removed and another rad was ordered and fitted then put back together. When they recharged the system this time all seemed well until they turned on the air con and another gush of gas from the left side rad, the machanic said it needs another rad for this side sir !!. Another rad was ordered the bumper removed (again) and refitted this time all was ok, and still is 3 years later.

The bill = 3 x recharges @ £70 each, 2 x rads, 2 x trace die @ £20 each and 9 hours labour. Total = £ 1367.50 inc.

I would recomend that if one rad has gone the other is on its way out, and while the bumper is off have both changed, this will be cheaper as you will only need 1 x recharge and two rads + less labour. Thank god the warranty picked up the bill. !!

You are right, leaves and debris go through the vents and sit in the bottom against the air con rads the core then rots and leaks the gas out.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Thanks Rob, much appreciated. I have to decide whether to buy and accept the cost, or look for another which may have the same, latent, problem. Certainly a warning to others to keep their intakes clear! Tony

Eurocarparts have the radiators for about £160 each. I've got someone about to quote on mine so I'll let you know if he can get them any cheaper.
