air con removal

I am going to be removing the a/c from my 1990 turbo. Has anyone done this? Just trying to work out what parts I need. I havent really looked at it yet but was thinking that I would just need the shorter belt off a non a/c 2.5 litre. Are there any other parts that I would need?

If you take the a/c off you can re-locate the alternator lower down - away from the turbo

- and I just happen to have a non-ac mount for the alternator on my spares sale [;)]
 
I also have a nice non AC alternator mounting including nearly new fan belt and threaded adjuster available if needed!

I did this, but along with replacing the engine.
You need the alternator bracket refered to above and the belt.
The AC compressor is connected to the wiring loom with a plug, which means wire no cutting is needed.

I didn't do it engine/turbo in place but some have, but I don't see how it's possible to remove the rear upper bolt of the alternator bracket turbo in place as it should hit the compressor cover when sliding it out.
 
Lots and lots of stuff, aircon compressor, evap unit, all the plumbing, major wiring chnages, removng the dash to get into it all! Easier to buy another car with it!

I had my compressor re-fitted by ph sportscars a few years ago - who swapped the mount as well. I don't recall them sayng they had to remove the turbo (mind you they did charge quite a lot for the job including re-fitting the a/c lines, which turned out to be leaky [:(])

It was E36, but my plans may be due for another rethink & may be going to sub 1000kg FWD (I hear it's getting quite popular) - watch this space [:D]

The compressor is the heavy bit - although I haven't weighed it. with condenser & dryer you might be looking at 10kgs? There's probably an answer on rennlist.

the other benefits are the re-location of the alternator & I have read the mount is stronger.
 
Mounting the alternator in the lower position allows for using turbos with 3"+ compressor inlet size without grinding the alternator to make room for the ducting.
 
I will have to try and find other means of lightening aswell. It becomes a bit of an obsession trying to loose weight. The weather in scotland is crap anyway so dont need a/c.
