air con????

Hi,

Recently noticed when my air con is on at say 18 degrees the vents blast nice cold air however the windscreen vent blows warm air. If I press the window override switch hot air blasts out. Is this a symptom of my air con needing re-gasing??? Never noticed this before. Coolant is ok and 2 new rads in the last 6 months.

When the system is set to Auto, I've never noticed the windscreen vents blowing warm air while the rest of the vents are blowing cooled air (ie in summer). It might be that when the outside temperature is cold, the system is set to blow the warmest air available to the windscreen first, and then switch over to the vents as the system warms up. When you press the Defrost/Demist button it DOES direct all hot air to the screen. This is what the workshop manual says:

As in other Porsche cars, the air-conditioning system of the 911 Carrera (996) is equipped with a "Defrost" button, which ensures maximum window defrosting efficiency by suitable control of the heating and blowing power and air distribution. In the interest of simpler use, only one button has to be operated here to direct the full heating power to the windows in order to ensure rapid defrosting when the vehicle is operated in wintry conditions.
