Air-Conditioning fault: ideas welcome

Hi Guys,
the air-conditioning on my 993 has developed a fault. I suspect it is electrical because the compressor clutch does not engage. Meter readings suggest that the clutch is OK, and it can be made to operate with an external connection. All fuses are OK and swapping the various relays around makes no different.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be, and what I should check?

Thanks in advance,

Ian.

From memory there is a safety device on the 993 that stops the clutch engaging if the air con gas has escaped. I think it's done via a pressure sensor in the system. Do you know when the system was last re-gassed.

Ian.

Thanks, that could well explain what's going on. I'll get it checked and let you know.

The system was re-gassed about three years ago following a refurbishment of the front condensor.

I had exactly the same problem - a/c clutch not engaging but would if external power was applied. Regassing resolved the problem. There is, as mentioned by a previous poster, a sensor which stops the clutch engaging as the compressor could get wrecked running 'empty'. There is oil mixed with refrigerant so 'no refrigerant' 'no oil'!

Kind regards
Anton

best to do is pass the car on porsche scanner. I had the same incident 6 years ago, filled the system and 90 euros after, no luck. Guy who filled it said gas was ok.
Scanned the car, and fault was condensor temperature sender, 28 euros after, clutch engaged.
