AIR CONDITIONING

Hey guys, i have an 81 us spec SC with air con, it didn't work when i got it and being it's a targa i really don't have a need for it, so i was wondering is it easy to remove the air conditioning unit from the engine, or is this a bad idea??

Hi Retro,
Been thinking about your question.
Firstly if you just want to save power taken by the compressor then remove the belt drive.
Secondly if you want to save weight as well as power then remove the compressor relay and the compressor as well. Although I have not removed a compressor or system contents my self (as my Targa does not have air con) I don't believe it will be that difficult. If you do this and keep all the parts you remove i.e.compressor & flexible pipes etc then they can be put back on and get the system recharged . If you want me to look at my manual for a removal proceedure for the compressor, pipes and gas etc let me know.
Final thought, if you are thinking about selling the car in the near future then air con could be a good selling feature so make sure you can go back to the starting point.
cheers
John

cheers for info John, the belt is already off, just wanted to save a bit of weight but as you say could be better leaving it on to keep it original

cheers
