Air filter

Hi all,
Im thinking of buying a new air filter for my 86 turbo and would like to know what people think about panel and cone filters?

Also i've seen pics of cars with the cone filter infront of the header tank i guess the mas has been change? What would the gains be by doing this?

Just one more question, would putting a cone filter on make what i call the turky noise when you change gear?

Any advice would be great.

 
I got my K&N panel 2nd hand for a tenner 9 years ago, although spent another tenner on the cleaning kit for it a few years later!
