Air Idle???

Hi All,
When freewheeling up to traffic lights i'm getting an odd situation. As I'm slowing down and disengage the gear, the revs return to idle speed and then suddenly shoot up to about 1300 and back again. On two occasions it has then dropped down to zero and stalled. Someone told me they think it's something to do with "Air Idle". Is this a seperate mechanism/unit that can be adjusted or cleaned in some way?
Any clues would be appreciated.

It depends on the year and model of your car. If it is a 1998-1999 C2, then it has a mechanical throttle with an idle control valve. This valve sometimes gets dirty and causes the sort of problem you are having. It is held on the side of the throttle body with two screws, and can be removed and cleaned. There is a gasket, so be careful, or get a new one before you start. Part number 996.110.310.50 (£1.28 inc vat)

If it is a later car with electronic throttle, then it is most likely that the throttle body needs cleaning. Carbon builds up, and stops the butterfly sealing consistently.
