Air Oil Separator Question

Hi,

I had quite a big puff of oil smoke (enough to concern me) when exiting a roundabout the other day.

I have done a few searches on here and the Air / Oil Separator has come up a few times. Is there a way to check this? I disconnected the Y pipe between the unit and the throttle body and it had some oil in it, enough to wet my finger, but not enough to drip out of the pipe.

Does anyone know if this is normal?

hi there new to forum so here goes the oil in the y piece is normal but it depends on how much, how old is your boxster and how many miles on it .normally the signs are more and more smoke and possible breathing promlems ,no real way of testing the separater,it is normal to get a puff of smoke on start up due to the design of the flat six engine .i work at a main dealer so if i can help any more let me no of you have an old boxster with a few mile on it 40000 plus i would recomend changing it cheers andy

I eventually had my separator changed after previous attempts by my Indy to cure the CEL illuminating (Changing the O2 sensors and MAF didn't do it). All through that period of investigation I could hear a 'gas leak' from the engine bay. This was most noticeable at idle and could be heard at the driver's side vent. Turning the engine off would lead to a hiss (air being sucked in under vacuum) for a couple of seconds. The cause of this turned out to be a leaking separator.

Thanks for the advice guys.

My car is a '99 3.2S with 52K on the clock.

There is no noticible air leak sounds and I don't think there is a vacuum created (I can remove the filler cap with the engine running).

Haven't had any more smoke. I'll let it develop and see what happens.
