Air/Oil Seperator *not* causing James Bond smoke?

Hi All,

Unfortunately my first post on the forum is not a positive one :(

I have a 52-plate 50k mile C4S and after hard driving, I was accelerating hard the other day in 3rd when I suddenly had a massive James Bond special effect-esque "explosion" of light coloured smoke out the back. Obviously, my initial reaction was to be scared ****less (visions of bits of engine littering the road etc etc). However, I wasn't dropping any oil, some smoke was still coming out of the exhausts, but it cleared after a while. Then after switching the car off for 15 mins or so, and starting it up again, there was more blue smoke from the exhaust, mainly the left one, which once again cleared after 20s or so.

Conventional wisdom for these symptoms seems to be that a seal in the AOS has gone. However, having taken it to the specialist, they say there is no evidence of that: there is no smoke on start up, no smoke explosions and no (extra?) "vacuum" or something (can't remember exactly the details of that).

They think that it may have just been over filled with oil, (which could apparently cause this, can anyone explain?) but I'm not convinced it was.

So, my questions are:

- Is there actually a problem and are the garage potentially trying to cover their *rse given that I'm still under warranty for another 1000 miles or so (I don't think they are, but let's cover all bases here to be sure, had a bad experience about a year ago)
- If it isn't the AOS, what else could it be and how serious would that be?
- What should I look out for in the near future which might indicate something IS actually wrong and needs immediate attention?

This is my first ever Porsche so any help would be much appreciated!

Overfilling could cause it. A better check to see if the AOS has split internally is to remove the rubber inlet pipe to the throttle body and look inside for oil residue.

If you have overfilled, it could cause splashing in the sump, as the M96 isn't a true dry sump engine.

Sounds like classic AOS fault to me. Mine did it on my previous car and scared the pants off me
 
Hi Richard, thanks for the welcome :)

I picked the car up on Sat after they had changed the oil and refilled it right in the middle between the min and max. I had a good look at what, if anything, came out the back when i started it up from cold. No blue smelly smoke unlike on the previous Sat morning when i took it to the garage. I took it from London to Leeds and back this weekend with no problems as well.

I'm guessing it's still worth having a check to see if the AOS has split internally? Unfortunately I am a total novice when it comes to actually doing *anything* to a car engine (other than checking fluid levels etc) so if someone could show me a pic (or point me in the direction of one) that would show me what i'm looking for, and how i'd get to it, that would be much appreciated!

EDIT: apologies, i'm cancelling my (request for the moment!), i've just found a photo Richard posted in another thread showing where i need to go:)

Incidentally, reference the run back from Leeds late last night, I was v impressed with the fuel consumption - i got over 30mpg while making rather brisk progress down the M1. Same run in my previous Maser would have got me 20mpg at best. EDIT - come to think of it, the S2K would have struggled to do anything near 30mpg as well
