Air pump

I've just joined PCGB after buying my first 911, a 1978 SC, and just loving it [:)]. My car still has the air-pump fitted and connected - is it a no-brainer to disconnect it, or are there any issues to consider? I understand it was put in for US emissions, so if removed, does it adversely affect MOT emission testing here in the UK?
cheers
Matt
p.s. not sure why my profile is showing me as a non-member, I'm a fully paid-up one now!

Hi Matt welcome, do a search there is a load of info on air pump removal, MOT is not a problem.

I second that. The maximum CO for older cars is 4.5% and my SC without the air pump is around 2% CO.There is still scope to lean it off a bit more without harm.

As you say mine and all other SC owners air pump systems are on the scrap heap but clearly something is not right, retrace your steps and tighten the belt to give a deflection of 15mm at the centre. If you want that contraption to work properly, change it's filter too. It's a no maintenance item so if it has gone pop, you'll have to find another.

Not sure which bolts you are having trouble with but the bolt going through the pump to the arm needs to be flush otherwise when you put the pully wheel back on it will touch it.
hope this helps.

Hi Sib8292,
Like you I also wanted to keep originality and I have kept my air pump fitted to my 1983 SC . My reply is on a slightly different subject but relevant to the air pump system.
Over last winter I removed the exhaust system to replace all the gaskets and bolts and in doing this the air injectors were visible in the exhaust ports.I found that all the air injectors air holes were blocked with carbon so the air pump wasn't actually doing what it was intended to do, my car has 112,000 miles on the clock. The air injectors are blank ended and have 2 cross drilled holes close to the end making 4 holes per injector approx 1.5mm diameter. So my pump was pumping against a blank end. I used a piece of stiff wire with the end of the wire bent at right angles to unblock the holes.
To do this cleaning it was not necessary to remove the injectors, so if you sort out the assembly issue with your pump or replace it you might need to check your injectors are clear of carbon.
