Air suspension - yes or no?

Just ordered a Cayenne S diesel, but gone with the basic steel suspension. I tow an 1800kg caravan . Any advice appreciated on whether I should spec the air suspension - is it worth the additional £2500?

I'm thinking that the self levelling in particular would be useful. Apart from wet fields I dont do any offroading, so no issue there.

I have air suspension on my Diesel S and like it. To me the benefits are:

  • Smoother ride. You notice the difference when you go in a steel sprung car
  • Can lower the back for easy loading or dog entry. That feature gets used a lot on my car
  • Can raise the car to get over rough ground but appreciate that may be of no benefit to you. I do a lot of off road work
  • Self levelling when car loaded. You can get a lot in this car

Downsides are cost and longer term maintenance costs

I have 2 Cayennes the oldest and the latest .
Both have spring suspensions .
I find both very comfortable cars to travel in and never having had air
cant really imagine that there would be that much of an improvement in comfort level .
Plus i do tend to feel the less you have on the car the less there is to go wrong .
We have heard of quite a few incidents on here of Air problems .

Thanks for the replies.
I've decided to go for it. Critical to me for towing is the self levelling, and the ability to switch to the harder sport setting when towing to avoid the porpoise effect of 140kg on the towball.

The test drive I had was a steel sprung car, and it did feel very comfortable and "planted" for normal use, but I suspect would not be quite as good when towing. My current X5 is self levelling, and is perfect for towing.

I have air on my 2014 cayenne and its a much better ride than a steel sprung version I also have driven and been driven in, no brainer for me

I've had both too, and prefer the air which makes for a particularly noticeable improvement for any rear passengers, as well as the other self levelling advantages.

I've got air on my Cayenne, the ride and flexibility of settings are fantastic, I also have the factory fit electric tow bar pack as I used to tow a twin wheel caravan. I previously had an Audi Q7 and a Range Rover Sport both on air and have never had any issues.

As as in an earlier post "no brainer"

Thanks everyone for the input. I have spec'd the air. Had already gone for the electric towball, ot one on my current X5.

Cheers
