Airbag deactivation and carbon centre console

I've just had an OPC fit the airbag deactivation kit to my 997 with a carbon centre console and the light unit that is placed on the centre console has been fitted over a square piece of, what looks like black electrical tape surround.

Apparently this is normal when the light switch is being fitted to a carbon centre console.

My old 4S with a leather centre console didn't have this and I think the tape looks naff.

Does anyone know if this tape surround is standard fitment for the carbon (and I assume plastic) centre consoles?

I guess my question still stands for any plastic / solid centre console even if it is not carbon.

Any responses gratefully received.

Sasha,

I've really no experience of this, but it doesn't look right to me and I would certainly be querying it. Even the tape looks to have been bodged. [&:]
Hopefully someone here with the same mod. will be able to advise.

Regards,

Clive.

I can understand why they would put the tape there to protect the console while fitting the switch but surely it doesn't need to be there permanently?! I agree - it looks really naff. Does the tape go into the hole or is it just surface mounted? Can't tell from the photo. I have a colour coded centre console - the black tape would look really nice against the red.............[:-]

I sent the photo to my PC. I can't really put the reply on here (I have e-mailed it to the OP) but suffice to say they weren't particularly complimentary about the workmanship.[&:]

Many thanks for the post and the email - really appreciate the feedback.

I have written to the original OPC and booked the car in for it to be looked at again.

Aside from the time and effort wasted in taking the car back, I suppose worth things can happen in life than a poorly fitted light switch!

Thanks again!

My USA car came with this option as standard and it does not have tape around the light.

On the underside of the console there is a pre-marked area to cut out, if it is done correctly the light should fit without the tape.

I'm taking the car back to the OPC next week and should get everything sorted out then. I'll report back on how it goes! S

I've had 2 of these retro-fitted to cars with body coloured i.e. plastic centre consoles, both without the tape. Either they are covering a botch up or, maybe the tape is part of the kit, just to protect the surrounding area whilst cutting and the fitter hasn't read the instructions properly [:D]

Good luck in getting it sorted.

The carbon looks damaged in the top left of picture. Also is that light correctly positioned anyway? Looks as though it's overhanging the curve slightly on the right hand side.
