Airbag Deactivation Installed Today ....

New member
Just returned from JCT in Leeds after having my airbag deactivation kit fitted in my Boxster S.

Its the only thing I could do to convince my wife that the Boxster is a "family" car
(I do however have 2 children so one will still have to go in the boot)

At £370 though I think I should have sold one of my children !!

Roy

(For those that do not know this gives you ISOFIX connectors on the passenger seat, a switch to deactive the airbag and a nice light telling you have done so by the ashtray...and a smaller bank balance)

Hi Roy,

Do you have to purchase a porsche car seat or can you fit any brand and it still work?

Thanks,

Andrew

The kit gives you ISOFIX connections so I suppose you should use an ISOFIX seat. I've emailed most of the major manufacturers of child seats (Britax, Mamas&Papas, etc) to see which would be best and none of them have tested their car seats in a boxster so were reluctant to recommend any seats. Only the Porsche seats have been tested properly.

I'm currently using a standard (not-isofix) Maxi-Cosi child seat and it seems to fit fine.

Thanks for replying.

I spoke to porsche in bolton who said that it was an automatic kit so when I plug in the car seat it deactivates the airbag. They didn't know if it would work with my existing seat so recommended me buying theirs (suprise!).

By switch, do you mean an actual physical switch on the dash?

Thanks,

I also got it fitted just to prove that it could be a family'ish car.

The indicator light that they install has an anoying habit of flashing while driving.

Does yours?

Does yours have to light levels...bright an ignition on and then fades slightly when started?

Had it back to the dealer with no luck as yet.

Cheers

When I got my airbag-deactivation kit on my 986 3 years ago it required a Porsche child-seat. The airbag deactivation was done with what is essentially a seat belt buckle set-up, you insert a buckle that is part of the child-seat into a seatbelt mechanism installed under the front of the seat. This then disables the airbag - warning light flashes for a minute after you start the car. The child-seat and the deactivator cost me £500, including fitting :(. Not cheap, but when I saw the look on my 3 year old's face when I took the top down, it was worth it. The seat was ridiculously expensive - £350, but it is isofix and has come in handy in other cars at times, and each of my 3 kids has made use of it, so that makes me feel a bit better.

The new kits dont need the seat belt swicth. instead they have a dashboard mounted switch. They still fit the ISOFIX mounts which is handy.

Dont think the wife would have been happy if i bought car only for me.....then again it didnt go down well when i told her how much the kit cost!! Must have slipped my mind to tell her before buying the car!!!? ooops
