Airbags weight

Is it difficult to un-install air bags (pass + driver) and associated bits from an RS? and is it possible/easy to re-install them again?

Just how much weight difference would there be?

Mick, I was led to believe the airbags weighed approx 2.5-3kg each (passenger one larger), I am sure someone will come along with the exact answer, but I doubt that is too far out.

I considered removing the airbags from my previous RS, not so much for weight, but perhaps to get closer to the RS ethos and the holy grail of the Leichtbau :)

I never did take them out, just in case I ever needed them.
Current car is without, but has full harness and no seat belts, I don't miss the airbags so much on the basis that, with a tight harness you are not going anywhere.

I am quite sure a well set up RS would drive exactly the same with airbags and electric windows as it would without. The major interior component which makes the most difference is the bucket seats over the occasionally fitted sports comforts...buckets make the car.

I am looking into removing mine at the moment (964t) - I believe Porsche give them a 15 year lifespan. Also, i believe these early airbags were much more dangerous,so definately worth ditching in favour of modern ones or have none at all to save weight ( & money).

I have been down this idea of airbag removal with my last carrera 2, because of the insurance implications etc
no porsche main dealer or independant would touch the job, I think an OPC would inspect and service but dont
think they would remove due to any come backs as they would be deemed liable in ant event of injury.

Apart from the actual airbags on the dash and steering wheel, is there anything else heavy to remove eg in the front of the car such as sensors etc?

Not so much for the weight alone 'cos it'd be easier to loose weight on the driver![;)]
i want to use a steering wheel without airbag, and just don't want to leave half a system in the car doing nothing other than weighing it down. I suppose I can leave the passenger side one on, but would the warning light not come on if I just took out the steering wheel airbag?

I remember reading somewhere that you can take a fuse out somewhere to stop the warnign light come on? Anyone know the detail?

An OPc or more likely an indy Porsche service shop can overide the airbag light staying on with their Bosch hammer.

you can just unplug both airbags, then remove ,they will not go off. Most just take the bulb out, easy to then re install all.
