Aircon re-gas

I have replaced the aircon compressor on my 86 944 Turbo.

I need to get the new one (reconditioned) re-gassed. Is this a straight forward job?

It depends which gas it last used. If it was R134a then it should be easy enough. If it was R12 it could well be a nightmare of leaking seals.

Hi Jon, I'm in Northampton too and I use www.airconone.co.uk He is fully mobile and well versed in the 944 A/C system whether it uses old or new gas (he has done quite a few Register members cars). Your only problem is that he covers N.London to Bedfordshire so you'll need to find a friend with a driveway in Bedford or Milton Keynes.

Ask him about his V8 Triumph Stag while he's there [8D]

I don't know what's involved. I got my specialist to do it at my last service. It only cost £60+vat for an aircon service and regass which involves a vacuum test.

By the way, how long should we expect a re-gas to laston 944's? I was expecting to have to regas every year and my system seems to have given up the ghost since its last regas so it's booked in for another service and regas in a couple of weeks time.

Mine lasts two years between regasses but I do religiously use it at least once a month over the winter to keep the seals lubed. Airconone weighs the amount he takes out to calculate how much has leaked and last time I think it was around 20% down

Does it actually leak or is it consumed somehow by the workings of the system? The service I had included a vacuum test which performs two tasks: to check for leaks and to withdraw moisture in the system. If the system has no leaks (mine didn't) how can the gas leak out?

It weeps past seals over time. The vacuum test just checks for big leaks. Running it monthly as Paul mentioned helps keep the seal supple and less likely to bleed off gas. At the end of the day it's a pressurised gas being retained by O-rings on shafts in some cases so it's never going to be a 100% seal.
