Aircon V-belt

My 993 C4 has just shed its second aircon V-belt in 12 months / 4k miles. I replaced the first myself but had it checked over by my local indy for tension and pulley alignment - they said it was fine. Then I noticed some wear starting on the edge of the fabric (not the teeth), and now it has popped off completely. The replacement was not Porsche original, which may be the problem, but I'd appreciate any hints about how to stop this happening again, and concerned that it doesn't happen to the other - more critical ! - belts (they look fine to me).

Thanks,
Rob

mine came off just as i brought the car, and broke the wires to the clutch, have a new clutch but have not fitted it yet. think they need to be checked regularly

Had the same thing with my alternator belt, it was slipping, so I had it replaced ( with a genuine Porsche part). 8 months later it started to slip again, so had it tightened up. Another 1500 miles later it started to slip again, and then snapped.

Had it investigated by the Indy, but no real resolution yet

I recall a modified pulley was fitted to later cars and it was retro fitted to mine by OPC when I requested belts were changed a few years back. I think this solves the belt wear problem as mine ok since. Someone with more knowledge will no doubt confirm or otherwise.

Hi Maurice

Sounds like thats what needs to be done on my car

Thanks for the info [:)]

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Looking back through the car's records all new belts were put on in 2006. I've ordered a new aircon V-belt from local OPC and will attempt to get the alignment spot-on when I fit it.
