Not sure if this has been asked before - I have just purchased a 1994 968 and the aircon is not working. I have been struggling to find anybody to sort it as mine was an after market fit by DIAVIA UK who no longer exist

I have tried 2 companies who have attempted refill the system but it will not work and over pressurises.
I am possibly not the only person with this problem - any thoughts who could help?

Blimey, a new one on me, and a pity that the guys who have tried can't identify the problem. Was it an incompatible fittings or valves issue?

I have used in the past and can recommend this chap - http://www.autoairconditioningltd.co.uk/index.html (I remember him being Byfleet way, but not sure). He knew Porsches and 911's so might have some idea or can advise.

Not sure what their issues were , one was a ex Diavia agent many years ago. To be fair they spent hours checking for leaks then filled the system , including an oil , with r134a. When we fired up the aircon it apparently went way over pressure and they advised it could blow the rad or damage the compressor. They drained it out. I gather an old system on r12 needs r12 gas?
Am seeing a guy in Dorchester who still retrofits aircon and repairs the many older cars with aircon.
What amuses me is there is apparently an EU ban on r12 gas but it's still readily available in France/Belgium/Germany/Poland etc etc .....only not in the UK!
I will post the outcome. There must be 000's cars on old aircon systems.
 
Interesting. The conversion over from the old gas is pretty straightforward - some valve/adaptor changes. Inexpensive too. My '90 964 was done with no problem. Is there a problem with the a/c condenser?
 
Well this what confuses me , the guy in Dorchester tells me it's absolutely straightforward and that he will have me up and running no problem (assuming there are no actual mechanical issues ) Yet my local specialist in bedford who spent hours, did get some cooled air coming through but after 2 or 3 minutes running the aircon pressure just went off the scale!
 
Sounds like maybe the need to move off from the old system first and then go from there rather than trying to get someone to persevere. All pipes and condenser stay as is - it should just be swapping out the old fittings on the compressor / refill points for the newer ones. Of course the caveat being that the Diavia unit you have hasn't got some proprietary design or unique mix of fittings/threads etc... I'm certainly no expert but if a/c is important to you then maybe someone can advise on a replacement system - assuming that as an aftermarket fitting in the first place makes it much easier to remove/replace too...
 
Connections were standard (r12) fittings. I am told that all rubber tubes would need re placement as they would be 'porous' to the new gas. Also possibly my condenser and under dash unit due to the higher pressures . I use the car for trips abroad but now the system needs a re gas it's only just become an issue. In the uk I can just open a window!
 
Hmmm... give the guy at munitioned a call, see what he thinks. I'm sure, or had thought, that the replacement gas didn't require in most/nearly all cases a wholesale plumbing replacement... maybe just the seals/o-rings on existing kit to neoprene type.
