Aircon

Hi Andrew, Sorry for such a trivial suggestion (you said all welcome!) - but I've seen this with mine and then I realised that fiddling with the button made it start up - just a contact problem in the button. Only ever seems to happen on humid days (or when I'm just back at the car off a wet mountain and the car is misting up)!! Seems to be rare and never seems to go wrong when I'm at home and have time to investigate further. Hope it's that simple. Mark

Paul I appreciate the suggestion but would that be for me or for you? If for me it would only make the car steam up even more! Andrew

Mark I did wonder about that - must try and source another switch and see if it cures it (any one got one? ). Thanks for suggestion - incidentally whereabouts are you based - I'm from West coast originally and still have relatives in Inveraray and Tarbert Anyone tell me how switch comes out of panel and if there are spades connectors - behind - if not then what? The answer may be self evident but haven't been out to garage to take a look. Andrew

The aircon on my car was fully checked over 2 years ago and has worked perfectly ever since.

Recently I pushed the "big" aircon button and the fans did not start up at once. This has become a pattern - sometimes it start immediately, sometimes after a little while and sometimes it doesn't start at all.

I have had system checked - no leaks found and it has been regassed.

Clutch on end of compressor is clearly working and when it kicks in the air is well chilled.

Next move ?

All suggestions welcomed.

Andrew

ORIGINAL: gresley incidentally whereabouts are you based - I'm from West coast originally and still have relatives in Inveraray and Tarbert
Very nice that way - I'm both north and south of there - divide time between Kentallen (which is up the top end of Loch Linnie) and Blanefield (on the west of Stirlingshire), and Glasgow. The roads are just soooo good - not that I've been out much recently. Mark

Andrew, if it is the switch that's causing this I'd love to know, as this fault has been driving me mad for about 2 years. I had a bad time with the aircon about 3 years ago (new condenser, new evaoporator) and all was working great, then this intermittant problem started. Nothing was showing up as wrong on the diagnostic, and then the temperature sensor went. Had it replaced on the assumption this would sort the problem but no such luck. Fingers crossed for you (and me!) ....

My car does exactly the same. Releasing and re presssing the button a couple of times usually does the trick. I was told it was dirty switch contact by my Independent. I've been meaning to use a squirt of switch cleaner but have never got round to it. pp

Okay - now for some really stupid questions ! 1. What does one use as a switch cleaner ( WD 40 ?) and where do you get it? 2. Do you have to pop switch out of panel and is so how do you do it? Simple instructions please as I am a bear of simple brain. Andrew

It would appear that I am also a bear with very limited obseration powers. When I finally took a look in the car it would seem that the switch is integral with the aircon control unit - or am I wrong? If it is how can I tweak( clean ) the switch without buying new control unit? My immediate thought was a compressed air can as one uses for cleaning computer bits - anyone any comment on this or further suggestions ( polite ones please Paul ). Thanks Andrew

Andrew Can i ask does your rapid demist button show the same intermittent fault, if so I think I have the answer for you. Also if you have the fan on full or near full speed in the car and turn up the thermostat for more heat does the fan die off and you get very little air through?????? For me it was a double relay on top of my engine in my 993 Turbo, showed no fault on Porsche Centre systems, lucky I have a great guy who does A/C and he managed to trace it out. Will look out the part no for the relay....... Cheers Al

Al Yes shows same rapid demist behaviour - which actually I should have recognised as running against a switch fault! Will check the full fan speed performance this weekend - advice as to p.n. and location on engine would be gratefully received. Andrew

Andrew Part No. for Double Relay is 81195253... Regards Location, I believe it was fitted in the engine bay on top of the engine, sorry im being a bit vague but wasnt there when it was being fitted. With being a Turbo it now has the Large Intercooler(if thats what its called) over the top of it.. Hope this helps/keep us posted. Cheers Al
