AirCon

I have been thinking on an off about fitting AirCon on my 1994 993. You may ask why, what with the weather we have but after last year's experience (not a pleasant one) of cruising down the Autobahn in nothing but my boxers, I wouldn't want to experience a repeat performance.

So the nitty gritty......
Is it worth fitting on a car of that age?
Does the aircon work properly?
Who are the best people to do it in and around London and is it quite a simple procedure?
And finally the dreaded question..... How much?

Any help appreciated as always.

Many thanks,

Seb.

I would agree with John, retro fitting of air con (to any car) is rarely worthwhile. I had a Jeep years ago and looked at fitting air con - it was cheaper to sell it and buy one that had it fitted as standard - I'm sure the same would be true of a 993. Regards it's performance, I find the air con in my 993 works just fine and has done since I got it. Regards Anton

Mmmmm well i am mad. I have had my 993 since 1999, and i did have the air con retro fitted. Reader Air did it, not cheap (http://www.readerair.co.uk/) but it works a treat. JZMachtech reckon it is the best conversion that they have ever seen. I have had the air con now for 5yrs, it is great, especially on the long trekks back home on the Autoroutes. The only problem is that my wife finds it too cold. But, I do agree it is expensive. We all have a choice! Good luck Seb (by the way, I have just changed my door mirrors to the convex ones) WOW! Happy 993'ing

JP thanks for the input. Do you mind me asking what it cost? This obviously has a huge bearing on fitting it. Thanks

JP - I spoke to this company thanks. Quite - not cheap, however, one thing the guy mentioned was that when fitting the aircon, they place the on/off button somewhere on the dash. As you have had experience of this, I wondered how it looked as opposed to replacing my exisintg Porsche heating control fascia? Does anyone else have any experience, of having Aircon fitted on a 993 and having a stand alone aircon on/off button. Any pics would help. many thanks,

Hi Seb, Been away so I have not had a chance to look at the Forum, so apologies for late reply. The button looks fine, it is a simple on and off thing, there is a small light in it (light green) but that is not very bright. Just enough though. That is a cheaper option to having the whole heating fascia. I like it. It works well, and it looks good. As I say, I am maybe barking mad, but I have had my 993 11 yrs, I have no intention to sell it currently, so I am very happy with the air con. As i say the only problem when coming back from France 2 months ago, was my wife moaning about how cold the car was!![;)] As i mentioned, JZMachtech thought it was a fantastic job. HTH!

Hi JP, thanks for coming back to me. I just can't see whereabouts the button would go on the dash as there doesnt seem to be a great deal of room?

Seb, It is located oto the right (near the driver) of the 4 (dash) buttons (lighter, fogs, rear window demister)... I will atempt to take a photo and post it on here... but be warned i am RUBBISH at technical things like that!! For me, and this is personal opnion of course, it is well worth it... my 993 is sorted, as i said i have had it nearly 11 yrs, and yes it is expensive, but having had it for 4 summers already, i have enjoyed having it. Cheers mate... JP

JP - thanks for your help, much appreciated. Damn it's hot today!

Seb, I am going to upload (or try anyway) a photo this weekend. On another topic, i switched my door mirrors to the convex ones... what a difference they make!

Thanks JP, that would be really helpful. I have not come across a different mirror option. Tell me more....?

To answer your original question, my standard aircon works just fine, I have had the car seven years and never even had it re-gassed. You do need the blower setting up high for it to be effective though - fan speed three or four minimum. The emergency Max Cool over-ride button is also useful. That closes all the vents and puts the blower on max with one button. PS - is anyone going to spill the beans on how much it would cost to retro-fit aircon ? Just curious.
