Just thought I'd share my pre-Eynsham experiences. Went to wash the car Saturday and the alarm started playing up, annoyed the neighbours no end! Come Sunday and about to set off for the day's jaunt to Eynsham, alarm goes off as I try to get in the car, no joy at starting the car but eventually get it to go quiet. Call out the Porsche Assistance (ie the RAC) they pronounce duff battery and tell me despite that the alarm it can still make plenty of noise with its own reserve supply. Anyway get going, decide to risk the trip and enjoy the day, even more when a 30 year old 911 had to jump start me to get home again!
Next day off to get a battery, Halfords don't list them for 2.7 '03; neither do Kwik-fit - that means it must be special and expensive! The OPC looks as though it will charge £235 for the privilege, if only I could get it there! Anyway source the battery from JZ Machtech for £100 or so, along with some sound DIY advice, not quite as the manual - will it be just like changing over the battery on the trusty Volvo - like hell!
One try and off goes the alarm again - at which point I give up and call out Porsche Assistance who willing come out to help. Yet even they had problems, it seemed impossble for the chap to do a simple changeover without suppressing the alarm and when the new battery got in, boy was it LOUD - the 2 minutes to do that bit seemed like half an hour.
Anyway if you are contemplating a DIY changeover be warned it ain't that simple or quiet!
One of the RAC guys told me to go of to Maplins to get a solar powered dash mounted charger for about £20, apparently it plugs into the cigarete lighter socket and trickle charges in the sunshine. Anyone had experience of these?
