Alarm goes on disconnecting battery

Hi,

Have a 1999 2.5 bought new, done only about 25k miles, as not main car - joined the club straight away, but this is my first post!

The battery has now come to end of life, I guess not bad going, so will be buying a replacement.

Last time I disconnected the battery it set off the alarm, which continued for quite a time. Is this usual behaviour? I was considering taking the fuses out, but I guess if it is residual current, that will not make any difference.

Also, searching the posts, the only reference to batteries suggested that a replacement from Halfords makes sense, rather than Orig Eqpt from Dealer.

The handbook explains how to disconnect the battery without setting off the alarm...

Something about putting the key in the ignition if I recall...

Most UK cars have a supplemental alarm siren in addition to the alarm horn. The siren has a built in rechargeable battery. When you disconnect the battery the siren goes off since it has it's own battery. Turn the key on first then disconnect the battery to the car.

We do not have this siren in the US, but I heard it is very loud.

Thanks for the responses.

My manual (ref 4/98) simply says that disconnecting the battery turns off the alarm. Must be updated in later additions.

The local dealer confirmed: ignition key in, turn on, and then disconnect the battery - no siren.

Got replacement battery, at Lancasters, Colchester. 10% PCGB discount, and worked out cheaper than Halfords.

They must have updated the Manual - sorry. I guess yours is an earlier car and they had not got around to "localised" versions. (German cars don't have alarms as standard if I recall!)

Glad you got it sorted, and nice to hear the OPC is cheaper than Halfords!

I about deafened myself not long ago. What you have to do is turn on the ignition and then disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal, this avoids any potential sparks and stops the alarm going off!

I found Costco were cheapest for a nice Bosch battery, £30 odd I think last year. My OPC wanted £100 ish.
