alarm & horn problem

A couple of problems have manifested themselves over the week on my 53 plate 996. I think it's a MY04 car.

Alarm - one key appears to function in that the light comes, and stays on whilst the fob is pressed, but the alarm does not come on/off. The light on the second key just flickers once when pressed but alarm does not turn off/on. The key fobs open the bonnet and engine lid. I've put new batteries in both fobs. The alarm appears to work. I've resorted to locking using the key. One evening I was slow in getting in/starting the car and alarm went off. A few choice words were uttered by the neighbour! What are the likely causes? Is it the key fobs or the receiving units? Is it a trip to the OPC to check? Costs?

Horn - One horn failed last year and I was praying the other would be OK. Well that's failed also. How do I check if they have failed or it's a relay/fuse. If I have to change the horns, how do I get to them? Where are they located? Is there a technical diagram anywhere that I review.

Any and all help appreciated.

The light should flash rapidly when you press the button. Staying on, or flicker-and-stop sounds like the remotes have died. You can try re-starting the processor by removing the battery, put it back in the wrong way round (reversed polarity) for 3-4 sconds, and then putting it back in the right way round. This occasioally works, but probably only one in ten times.

Otherwise you will need to get new remote(s) and that usually means a trip to the OPC, as they have to be coded to the alarm system. You might find an independent who is prepared to get the security codes from Porsche, but you will need to provide them with a copy of your V5C and a letter of authorisation.

As for the horns, there is a DIY in the Technical Articles section of this forum. Trouble is, you need to be a PCGB member to access that section. If you are a PCGB member, you need to get your forum status changed. If you are not a member, drop me an email by clicking the link under my avatar.

Edit: Sorry - the horns are on a single fuse (B3), so it sounds like both horns have gone.

Thanks Richard, thorough as always.

Looks as though both key fobs have gone. Reversing the polarity didn't work. Fuse is OK so looks like the horns have also gone. Oh joy of joy. I can wish happy new year to the OPC!

BTW, I am a member and have emailed the forum a few times without any luck.
