Alarm not setting

I have a 98 Boxster 2.5 and recently the remote key fob is not setting the alarm at all. I changed the batterry but nothing is working. The spare key has a broken button for the doors but the boot release works, therefore the system is operating correctly, so its the remote key fob thats not working. The LED lights operate but nothing activates. Soon as I unlock the doors and get in they both lock, thats never happened before.
Is it possible that the remote has lost its memory or link to the alarm system. How do I pair up the 2 again so the remote knows the correct signal?
