Alarm sleep mode and broken door handle!!!!

I have a little issue with my 1998 C2 996 that is am hoping someone has as easy answer to.
I am aware the "sleep” mode the car goes into after 3-5days and I normally unlock the drivers door, put the key in the ignition, turn it on then the alarm stops.
Others with later cars appear to be able to wake the car by turning the door lock key anti-clockwise but mine has never done that so I assume being pre-2000 the alarm system Is slightly different.
The issue I have is that the car is in sleep mode and the drivers door handle has just broken. How do I get into the car without smashing the window?
There is no key lock on the passenger side and the passenger door remains locked!
I believe there is a emergency cable behind the front light unit to open the bonnet, but then what, is there a way to power up a circuit easily to either wake the car or operate the central locking, thus opening the passenger door?
From playing with it before I know that even with the alarm going off the car does not fully wake until the ignition is turned, so the bonnet pull handle dead bolt is still engaged and passenger door locked.
Any help much appreciated, I don't really want to smash a window.

Long time since I've had this issue, but I remember too wake the car up I would use the key in the lock to unlock the door , then lock , then unlock with the remote , open door as usual. Mine a 99 my.

Have you tried holding the key in the unlock position for several seconds, to see if the driver's (or passenger) window drops?

Thank you all for the replies.
I managed to get into the car today. I used the key and locked and unlocked the car four or five times in quick secession, the first of which set the alarm off as normal. After this the passenger door unlocked and I could climb in, reach across and open the drivers door. The alarm was still going and could not be silenced by the key fob, but by turning the ignition on it stopped.
I thought it was then a good time to investigate the emergency bonnet release and removed the passenger side (rhd car) wheel arch liner to find the cable. I could not locate it at all and eventually found it rolled up neatly tucked under the plastic bonnet catch slam panel. Whoever removed the front PU to spray it clearly thought this was the best place for it so I am glad I investigated this now!
I have now relocated it to its proper home and tried it, it works well.
I pulled the drivers side door card off and had a look at the broken door handle. What a piece of rubbish engineering that is. I reconnected the threaded rod to the plastic arm, put back the collar and then secured that in place with two small zip ties, so hopefully it won't slip again. The door liner had been off before, and I managed to just pull down the top corner enough to access the back of the door look.
