Alarming

Hi all,

Spent ages walking around the Autosport show looking for a manufacturer that sold alarm systems but couldn't find one!

I was looking for some advice and pricing on an alarm that unlocks the doors from a key plip. Its got a Porsche aftermarket immobiliser fitted but to open the doors I have to use the key (yeah I know its not a massive hardship!!)

Anyone have any ideas or good buys?

Hi Leeky

My previous Lux had a Sigma alarm system with central locking capability my present car has a microscan system which operates the doors and alarm with a smaller button on the key blip to operate the electric boot lock seperatley this is the microscan AN550 which has since been updated but I understand Motorworld are one of their prefered suppliers for insurance though I think it has to be installed by a THATCHAM registered technician with a certificate others may know of different systems. I too was at the show and as you say did not see any vehicle security stands maybe we both only walked the same area repeatedly but I am pretty sure i had it all covered

Thanks Will, It maybe that we were distracted with the plentyful beauties that were on show, and I don't mean the cars!

Leeky, my '91 Turbo has been fitted with a Cobra alarm at some time in its past (2004, from memory) and this locks/unlocks from a 'plipper' - the red flashing LEDs in the door locking pins still flash too when locked.

It's a Cobra 3198 (just found the installation certificate [:D]).

Hope that helps!

Cheers

If you're not fussed about an an alarm, for about £20 you can buy a remote control locking unit off eBay. I fitted 2 of these now and they work very well and are easy to fit. Should take no more than a more to wire into the central locking control unit. Sturdy remotes, fantastic remote control range and they lock/unlock the doors with a reliable Germanic clunk. They can flash the hazards (extra diode needed) and do the boot release (relay required I believe but never wired the hatch in).

All Thatcham Cat1 alarms I have ever seen have an output to allow the triggering of central locking (indeed, I *think* it is a requirement for an alarm to get Cat1 certification.)

You can buy alarms for about £100 on eBay - new. Yes, they are only truly Thatcham Cat1 approved when fitted by a 'trained technician', but given that I have never yet found a technician who installs to my liking (far too much use of black sticky tape and other such nastiness) I have installed my own alarm on my last two cars, and asked the local car-alarm-fitting place to inspect it and certify it for me (which they are happy to do.)

Fitting is a pain (particularly if you do it well), but you can get a much better job that way. And I have built an interface between mine and the PA100 H&P alarm which my car came with as well, so it is VERY secure.

Many alarms have optional outputs, which can be controlled from the remote fob. This allows you to do things like wire in a remote boot release (useful, and easy on a 944), or window closure.

Oli.

Thanks guys, now I have an idea what to look out for.

The door pins flash when locked, is this just the immobiliser?

Same Clifford alarm as mentioned above - including fitting!! Ebay - £199.
London areas only for the fitting. Shame I'm in bloomin Manchester []

While you're at it you've got to get one that can open the tailgate as well!! I was quoted £350 fitted for a premium branded (can't remember which) alarm and immobiliser that would be able to operate my central locking, tailgate release, sunroof and windows. Tey did another model that had a Bluetooth function so you could programme in say your phone so that the engine would only start if you had your phone with you, so even if a prospective theif knicked your keys and alarm fob he still wouldn't be able to drive off in your pride and joy. That was pretty pricy though - circa £700 if I remember correctly.

My first Lux had an aftermarket alarm and keyfob operated central locking system.
Back in 97 my Wife's analogue cell fone used to operate the central locking system every time she made a call near the car ! [:(]

no alarm will most likely effect your insurance though....I have Toad in mine..it's old now but does the job....I would advise against a 'Clifford'...they are good alarms but I hate them, constantly making sounds...I made my son disarm his car that's currently parked outside due to the close proximity sound going off during the night...was driving me mad....lol

I just insured a Turbo with no alarm for less than an S2 with a full blown Cat1. They always ask for one, but in reality it seems to make sod all difference to the premium.

I think insurers usually want immobilisers, even the original H&P on my car made a difference for my classic cover.

Guy parks his car for the football match in a rough area. Little lad says "Oi mister, gies a fiver and ill watch yir motor while yer at the game". Guy says "Nah you're ok son, my german shepherd will look after it". Little lad "Can it put out fires?"
