Alarms

My insurance company have asked that I get and alarm for my 3.2 . has anybody had one put on. If so what make etc.

The car has the old porsche one on it, but I think it' s so old that it doesn' t have a thatcham rating.

can' t argue though £235 full comp isn' t bad( I hope )

I haven' t done it (having always used the factory fitted ones on my cars for the last 9 years), but if I were in your position I would look at Cliffords offerings.

What you go for depends on what you want to pay.

Normally insurance companies are more worried about immobilisers than alarms. The more circuits they break the better.

You could always ask your insurance company what they recommend. After all, it is of mutual benefit to choose something suitable.

So who is the insurance company - I' ll be renewing myself soon and am looking for a deal. With my age and driving record they should be paying me!!

I found that some insurers didn' t require Thatcham approved security if the vehicle is garaged overnight. Is this an option?

£235 fully comp - gosh, I thought that my £590 full comp (and protected) was good ! Mind you, a central London address, even with a garage, might explain it (and unlimited mileage).

My alarm/immobiliser is a professionally fitted Meta system, and, although it is Italian (and we all know what their electrics are like) has never given any problems in the 8 years that I have had the car.

My bigest premium saving is the alarm/immobiliser, not the fact that it is garaged, so having one fitted is always a good idea.

The other thing to bear in mind is that if the alarm was Thatcham 1 when fitted, and it may have now been downgraded to 2, it still counts as 1 to an insurance company (otherwise, we would be fitting new alarms every few years).

Hi

The insurance company is Carole Nash(they gave about a £30 discount for being a member). The cover is fully comp, the car doesn' t have to be garaged 250 excess 4000 miles a year. They require a cat 2 .

I tried Carole Nash last year and they weren' t interested in my ' 88. I saw they had changed in Porsche Post (p11 March 2003) but knowing my luck they' ll be at a ' 15 years or older' stage and then go even older next year!!

Or am I just cynical about all insurance?

By the way I' ve got a meta system on mine with the Porsche immobiliser (both on the car when I got it) - main dealer provided me with an immobiliser certificate which suited my insurance company (2 different ones so far)

I had a similar problem with Carole Nash for my 1989 model.
Heritage insurance provided me with the best price last year after shopping around at lenght.
I don' t really think it is worth phoning anyone advertising insurance for performance cars, the best prices were on classic policies. Heritage offered an agreed value policy with no security required(provided garaged overnight).

I' ve got a Meta alarm (professionally) fitted and I' ve had no problems in the four years I' ve had it. I originally had my unlimited mileage insurance with Peart and they required a Cat 1 alarm, but they sold my policy to the Royal & Sun Alliance.

I' m 43, live in West Manchester, have a garage and drive it (the car that is!) everyday. At £780 I may be looking for a new policy but I must say, I needed to make claim recently and I have had absolutely no problems or any hassle. The claim was handled with very little involvement from me, so maybe you get what you pay for?

Perhaps CarreraMan would set up a poll listing all insurance companies. The question will be something like " Which Insurance company would recommend the most highly to a friend?" It' ll be interesting to see the results!

Regards
Lloyd

I' ve booked in now to have a Clifford Cat 1 alarm , put in. They are also going to put in a microwave sensor for the targa top and make the car have remote central locking.

It' s going to cost £400. That' s sounds about right but I' m sure that someone will tell me if I' m getting ripped off.

[8D]Hey Colin,
I had my Selca alarm fitted 10 months ago, cost $250.00 fitted. (cat 1)
Insurance with Norwich Union, with 12k mileage, 650 pounds. Includes RAC cover, legal services, personal accident.(medical) This covers both my wife and self.
Any one who asks them for a quote mention me (see profile)[:)]

It is normally only valid for insurance if you get a certificate/receipt stamped by an approved installer.
