Alignment of Boxster Steering Wheel.

Hi, Hopefully a simple question!

Having recently had the tracking re-aligned on my 2001 Boxster S, I now find that the steering wheel is slightly out of line! (Not a major concern, but very annoying!)

Before I remove the wheel, I would be grateful if somebody would confirm if the wheel is secured on a spline or hex. shaft, as the workshop manual does not illustrate this.

Also, are there any issues I should be aware of before I start??

What Mark said!! You should take it back and get them to do it again. DO NOT MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL!!
Wheel alignment is adjusted at the wheels NOT at the steering wheel - if you move the steering wheel you'll never get it right.

Ditto .. what was said above .. take it back and get it realigned "including" the steering wheel


 
The normal drill for front wheel alignment is as follows:-

i) Lock the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
ii) Equalise the adjusters on both track control rods.
iii) Adjust each track control rod equally to achieve the desired geometry.

If these steps are followed everything should be correctly aligned.

You need to ask yourself if you should find someone more competent for future alignment. [:(]

Or maybe the steering wheel was always wrong and somebody previously adjusted the other stuff to centre it. On the two occasions my OPC has had the steering wheel off they managed to put it back not straight both times.
 
The steering wheel is mounted on a splined shaft. Thing is, if you are just 1 spline off it makes a big difference in having the wheel centered.

Thank you all for your replies.

I have spoken to my tech. He is adamant that everything is setup correctly on the rack, track contro; arms etc. He insists that the steering wheel has been removed at some point in the past.

He is a mate of mine, and I don't think he would feed me with false info (At least I hope not). With this in mind I think I will realign the steering wheel.

I will keep you posted. Keep your eye out for a Lapis blue Boster going round in circles!!!![:)]

There is a way to make sure the steering rack is centered, but I forget how.

If you reposition the steering wheel you might be able to tell if it has ever been removed. There are paint marks on the nut and splined shaft, It is usually red paint, but in this picture there is also yellow paint.

Before you pull the wheel offf you should mark the position. In the picture you see 2 white marks I put on the wheel and the shaft. Then with a black marker I made match marks. When you put the wheel back on you usually match the 2 black marks - but in your case you with go to the left or right by one spline.

There are 2 black plastic forked prongs that go into square holes in the wheel. When you start to put the wheel back on you want to make sure those prongs are going back into the square holes.

I am not sure the original location is all that relevent when the wheels have had to be re-aligned.
Once you confirm the trackrods are equalised and the tracking properly adjusted, just make sure the roadwheels are pointing straight ahead and then replace the steering wheel also in the straight ahead postion.

Don't hit it with a hammer....

Disconnect the main battery first. Since this is a UK car you have to deal with the alarm siren.

The air bag is held in place with two T30 torx screws on the back of the wheel. The air bag is heavy. When you unscrew the screws hold the bag in place with your hand so it does not fall out of the wheel. There is a yellow plastic connector on the back of the bag. This connector just pulls off. Place the air bag with the cover facing up in a safe place so a lightning bolt can'r hit it and set it off....

Once the bag is out you can remove the nut for the steering wheel. There is a washer under the nut. Need a 24 mm socket. Then you can pull the wheel off.
