Alloy wheel touch up paint/kit recommendations

Hi all

I've a couple of bubbles that have "popped" on 2 of my wheels (Standard Cayman S silver alloys, 5 spoke). Otherwise in good shape all around, any suggestions re DIY touch ups (rather than a full refurb)?

Cheers

Hi Craig,

Surprised you’ve had no answers. My suggestions are silver touch ups, either Ford Strato silver if you can find it or BMW Arctic silver should be a pretty good match. You can also get it from Chipex at a higher price but you should be able to get a better finish.

Remove the loose paint and corrosion, I use a modelling knife as a scraper to remove this. Degrease with something, I use aerosol surface cleaner (Halfords) and kitchen roll. Touch up with grey or white primer the bare aluminium. When really dry, say a couple of days, apply the silver. Apply coats of silver to build up the indentation (unless really deep). You can experiment with using a thinner or the leveller that comes with the Chipex kit to wipe across the painted defect to help levelling. When you’re happy it's as flat as you can get it apply one very thin final coat of silver, you'll get the best match this way. I use small artist or modellers brushes for application. The Chipex paint doesn't require a lacquer to finish but touch up paint does although for silver on wheels I don’t use it as it will affect the colour, but protection will be better.

I’m assuming your blisters are small, if larger, protection rather than a good match is probably your priority.

Cheers

Craig,

I think your wheels are of BBS manufacture? You could try contacting them for a paint code but I have a feeling that Porsche Arctic Silver could be a decent match.

I know that bodyshops used to say Porsche used Diamond silver which changes each year! So not totally satisfactory as codes can overlap!

I did get a very good match with Audi Diamond Silver a couple of years ago but it changed with age, just refitted my summer wheels after powder coating, expensive but I'll see how it goes.
