Alternative Warranties - warrantydirect.co.uk ?

Hi,

Has anyone had any experience of www.warrantydirect.co.uk ?

I'm about to purchase a 1999 Boxster 2.5 with no frills (78k miles) from www.911virgin.com . Has been overly cared for judging by the condition and the service history which is generally £1500 per year in servicing. They also did a major service instead of a minor before selling which puts my mind at ease a bit. This will be my first porsche.

I have 3 options im aware of regarding warranty.

1.) The dealer has said there is a £400 warranty i can take out which will cover me to the value of the car (i.e. engine dies).
2.) The warrantydirect.co.uk cover is about £1000 but covers the items listed for wear and tear aswell
3.) I could take the chance that its a well looked after car thats 7 years old so its highly unlikley it will suddenly die on me.

Has anyone got a warrantydirect warranty? Im wondering how much it helps to keep servicing costs down/steady?

Also does anyone know what the statistical chance is of engine dying / catastrophic failure on a boxter that has been run in, or what are peoples opinions on this?

Kind Regards

Ryan

If the £400 warranty covers up to the full cost for only £400 then that is a bargain (is that a full year?)
Henry must be subsidising it as I understand that these are normally far more expensive?
There was a mention of aftermarket warranties in this months 911 & Porsche World - I was suprised to see they are more expensive than Porsche's own scheme.

Under Porsche's own scheme, you can take it to Porsche, pay £100 (an hour's labour) to get them to do a pre-warranty inspection, and then buy the Porsche warranty for £875 (which also includes Porsche Assistance - Europe wide).

Henry would probably be happy to let you get the inspection done before you complete the deal as well. [:)]

Thanks very much for the reply Mark,

The £400 I believe was a year and im sure not as comprehensive as the Porsche warranty, hence the price difference (but my main worry is the really expensive things which this covers)

The warrantydirect covers for wear and tear as well as failed parts. Wasnt sure if porsche warranty covers for wear and tear aswell, seems to vary dependend on how much "goodwill" you get from them.

I think im going to go for the £400 warranty to give me peace of mind (after double checking what it covers). The following year(s) i may switch to the Porsche warranty or take my chances if im feeling lucky :)

This forum is a wealth of information! have been reading through the whole boxster forum )

Thanks

Ryan

warrantydirect refused to issue warranties to Porsches a few years ago, fed up with big claims.

You really need to check the cover - you might find the maximum for each claim is a low value (£3k say) and there may be a big excess for each claim too.

I can hardly believe that any Warranty company would cover fair wear and tear. Its against all the customs and practices of the Insurance Industry. It would bankrupt any issuing company within two years.
