Alternator belt pulleys

Does anyone know of a pair of alternator belt pulleys for sale. I am down to no shims and am getting the odd squeal from the belt (new). Went to Dick Lovetts in Swindon and they wanted £62 + VAT each for what amounts to a pressed steel disc. Outrageous. Any help appreciated. Steve

I've just replaced my belts but even without any shims the alternator belt isn't as tight as it should be and am getting the odd squeal. Looking back at old invoices from the last time they were done at a PC they used two different sized belts for the alternator and fan. I think the alternator belt was possibly 760mm long and the fan one 776 mm. This time round all suppliers indicated that they are both the same size at 776mm so that's what I ordered. I'm going to get hold of a 760mm one and see how I get on with that.

I've also read on p-car that there's a TSB giving info on updated pulleys which seem to be those from the turbo but can't get any other info to confirm that's the case or why.

Thanks for the help guys, have just purchased the turbo pulley halves (recommended up-grade) and the correct belt size for £62 incl VAT and delivery from Swindon, so looks like it was duff gen after all, shame as I was there in person when given it, alls well that ends well I guess.

The turbo pulleys are 993.106.268.01, and the associated belt is 999.192.343.50.

The Porsche Technical bulletin number is 1378. The above part numbers are confirmed in this document.

Those are for the fan, you asked for alternator in the 1st post, boy have you got me confused now!

No, those are for the alternator, the ones for the fan are the larger ones which bolt to the adaptor on the fan.

Looking at the parts listing by porsche, the alternator pulleys are items 15 (and are the smaller ones) and the fan pulleys are items 10.

(Alternator pulleys and belt are the ones which are rearmost on the car, the fan pulleys are between the alternator pulleys and the fan itself)

For anyone interested, now I have the hang of posting pictures, here's the pulley related bulletin.

Thanks for that Talby - the bulletin confirms my thinking that the alternator belt should be part number 999 142 343 50, ie 760 mm long, regardless of which pulley is fitted. As the belt I fitted was the same size as the fan belt at 776mm (as indicated on all the on-line shops) I think I'll try fitting the shorter one first and see if that sorts the squeal before going down the turbo pulley route.

I'm going to Edinburgh PC tomorrow to pick up winter wheels for my son's Boxster, so I'll pick one up then.

No problem Clyde, glad I could help. I think you are going the right route, I was having exactly the same problem as you and I think the shorter belt may have cured it. I'll be fitting the new pulleys anf belt tomorrow, I'll post and let you know how it goes. Best Regards Steve (Talby)

Finally got round to changing the pulleys. Mixed result, the pulleys are OK but the narrow 'V' belt gave off an odd noise which would only stop momentarily after a short squirt of WD40. Checked everything else and all was OK. I am now running the new pulleys with the old (wider) 'V' belt with a single shim and all is fine. No noises and no other issues in 300 miles. Steve

I put the 760mm belt in with the original pulleys a couple of weeks ago amd the tension seemed reasonable but I had to re-do the adjustment it when it started sqeaking about a week after it was installed. Looks like the belt stretched slightly because it was all set right first time round but all seems fine now.

Not sure what's going on as even the PC say my car should have the 776mm belt according to their system but there's no way this would ever fit.

Many many times i try to put a 760 length belt on the alternator drive (as the handbook states)and every time it's far too tight ( i usually don't even get as far as putting the nut on as it's so obviously too short for the routing) so i resort to a 776 and have had no problems as far back as i can recall. I think that some early cars take the 760 belt on the alternator drive, but i can't think when i last got one on with the correct tension.
