Alternator/regulator problem

Hi guys, On my way home last night I noticed that the dash voltmeter was only showing 12 V, but everything was running ok and no battery light so I carried on. By the time I got home (another 5 miles or so) it was reading only 11.5V. I turned off the ignition and then tried to restart with no joy only clicking so I put the battery on charge overnight.

This morning the battery is fully charged, showing 12.5V using a multimeter, (it was new 18 months ago) so started her up, no problem, voltage didn't drop below 10.5V on cranking so battery ok. Intially I got 14.4V charging at the battery then after a few seconds the voltage dropped steadily to 12V, I guess if I left it would have gone down to 11.5V as the day before.

Question-Is that just the voltage regulator backing up or the alternator? I'm going to take the alternator off anyway so I could get it checked I suppose, but don't want to be ripped off for a new unit if it's likely to be just the regulator.

I've read some other posts, but my problem seems slightly different. Thanks for any help.

Jon

Sounds like it could be the regutator - it is a Bosch part, and about £25-ish. There's quite a good DIY here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/408495-alternator-repair-regulator-replacement.html

Bosch Part number: F 00M 145 225 (Replaces F 00M 145 350).
Porsche Part No: 000.043.206.37.

Thank you Richard. Just fitted a new regulator and it has cured the problem. Great DIY instructions and the job was very easy, first engine job I've done on my 996.
