Alternator tensioner confusion

Hello all,

I am scratching my head over the hardware needed to attach the lower tensioner, used either to tension the A/C compressor or the alternator on cars that didn't come with A/C.

Could the generous owner of a 944 without A/C be able to snap some pictures of the bolts/nuts used down there, as what PET mentions doesn't make sense with what I have on the car.

hiya, the tensioner is pretty straightforward and is in essence just a larger version of tensioner rod used for the PAS pump. Im away at the moment so can't get to the garage to take a photo. Will get 1 for you 2morro evening if no one else has provided one.

Yes in non-A/C the alternator sits where the AC pump normally would. The alternator should pivot on its top mounting, which should be left slack for adjustment. The adjusting strut has a left/right thread arrangement and is of spanner size 17mm. Turn the centre section and it lengthens until the desired tension is achieved. Then nip up the lock nuts and the top pivot [:)]
 
Not very good but I think it shows it. It is just a bottle screw with lock nuts.

Mike, what can you see exactly on the engine side of the tensioner, is it bolt/washer/tensioner/engine block or can you spot some sort of small sleeve between the tensioner and the engine block?
 
Can't remember correctly but does the PAS pump tensioner attach to the same point??? Don't forget Mike's is a square dash and doesn't have PAS. Is yours oval dash?
 
This engine has the brackets for PAS! but looking at the original, the arrangement is similar, a lug on the block which takes the bolt which goes through the eye in the end of the adjusting rod. There is no extra sleeve that I can see.
The earlier alternator (95W?) when mounted on this engine doesnot line up the belt correctly like the later (115W?) does, also the later belt is wider.

Does changing the pulley on the alternator solve both problems?

I dont think it would, as the "offset" from the swinging bracket to the pulley is different.
Its not a problem, you just use the correct one, I know only because I wanted to test the old alt!
 
I just fitted back the tensioner and now I think I get it.
On the engine side of the tensioner there are two types of hardware.
Cars with A/C feature a short sleeve to move the tensioner slightly forward, presumably because the A/C compressor may sit slightly more forward than the alternator, well at least at the point where they attach with the tensioner.
Cars without A/C don't have the sleeve and use a smaller eye on the tensioner to work with the bolt which is smaller than on the other side.
