Alternator wire

Here's a nice simple one (!) on a 1984 2.0 litre 924. There's a sturdy wire which runs from somwhere on the back of the alternator to a grounding point via a mounting bolt on the front of the engine. This morning the voltmeter stuck on 12V when running and I notice that the end of the wire to the back of the alternator has somehow become detached ( not sure how, as the end-of-wire connector is a circular tab - nut and bolt come undone presumably). I guess it's a ground wire, but it's not obvious to which exact point I should re-attach it, as it's not something I had clocked before.
It must be straightforward, and advice would be appreciated

Yes this is so so simple you can do it by feel with thermal gloves on. I have made the assumption that you are referring to the earth braid, and it is secured by one of the alternator bracket M8 bolts.
