Alternator

Good evening all,

What is the "normal" indicated value on the V-meter ?

Mine constantly shows around 13.9 V on the cruise, seems a bit high as far as I understand ...

Is my alternator on its way out or could it be only the regulator ?

Not done one, but when I was under my turbo with the skid tray off it did occur to me that access to the alternator looked excellent and I remember thinking to myself it looked fairly easy to change. Lot easier than one on my Clio 16v I have just changed, which required bonnet, headlamp removed and radiator wiggled about to get mount bolt off before I even started on the tight access to tensioner. Reckon you have no bother with 944 turbo one, but am sure somebody on here has done one and can offer more advice than me

I had ago and failed. You have to go at it from above and below. firstly you have to remove all the pipework from above the alternator then you have to undo two bolts from below then another from above. You then need to remove the alternator from above. It's tight, and time consuming. I basically ran out of time so aborted the mission and took the car down to my local specialist. It still took him 2hrs with a ramp and previous experiance. It was not a job he was relishing when I rang him up. Good luck.

Hmm guess my guess was wrong on this one, my belkt squels a little sometimes when very wet, so prob going to have to nosy round there myself, let us know how you get on with, cheers

The thing that makes it difficult/impossible to remove from underneath is the A/C compressor. If you just want to replace or re-tention the belt then that should be an easier job as you are not removing the alternator. A pain in the backside really as I replaced the alternator on my prevois Golf in less than an hour. It shouldn't be a difficult job. The look on my specialist face when I asked him to do the job said it all which made me feel a little better. Having said all this I wouldn't want to put anyone off having a go - it is a simple job in principal, but just allow yourself alot of time.
