Aluminium Doors

Couple of questions for the resident experts... aluminium doors (now retailing for about Euro 12k apparently!) were standard fit on the 3.8 RS and the RSR... also on the Cup cars???

Do they rust?

(Or more directly, I'm def. I've got aluminium doors on mine... and one of them appears to have a small rust patch on the corner!)

Aluminum doors will not rust but can oxidize. If you were to "burst" the small bubble on your aluminium door, you would find a white chalky powder. Oxidization will happen when water/salt will come into contact with aluminium. FYI, I have had Audi A8s for 6 years now. They have aluminium bodies (not just doors) and I have seen on all of them a few little bubbles of oxidization. I would not be concerned about them.

Quite sure ali doors were not on cup cars...too much of a contact sport [:D]

You will be able to tell if you have them, they feel so much lighter than regular steel versions when closing.
 
Yeah, they are def. much lighter than anything I've ever come across... car is back after a little more fettering... and in even more marvellous form than before... turns out the engine mountings were a bit loose... To say tightening them up has reduced the nvh in the car leaving just pure induction snorting would be an understatement!
Not sure why I thought they put ally doors on the Cups... must have been some Porsche magazine mis-information campaign at some point... you are right, would make absolutely no sense at all.
 
Carbon fibre not road legal due to way they break up on impact. Some lightweight 'glass' doors with integral Cup mirrors are available.
 
Really Melv? What about cars like KTM xbow, its full of CF? Also Caterham has CF wings etc. I've heard that CF isnt legal for some race series, but not for road use.
 
Would be interesting to see that bit of legislation? F40, F50 , Venturi and Carrera GT ? all have them don't they ?

They also have built-in side impact protection.

Russ doesn't mention a cage - but would a standard RS cage be enough to protect the driver from a side impact through a carbon fibre door?

 
good point, could just be the doors that arent allowed on a car due to intrusion into the driver space. Seems like a credible strory
 
This from a pal who has made a 996 Cup road legal.......carbon doors had to be replaced............

dp was there before anybody had heard the name Alzen....[;)]

I´d rather spend the money on track time and coaching, helped me more each time than any lightweight part can do[:D]
