Am I being daft?

You know when you get a new car and having just spent all that hard earned cash on it, you start to worry if its all as it's meant to be!!?

I have a pre-face lift Boxster S (2001). Can someone put me out of my misery and tell me are the side vents on each side meant to be different? One sticks out and the other doesn't. Just been to my local OPC to check it out and they didn't have any pre-face lift models to compare....as the vents changed with the face lift.

Also, is there and expected oil consumptione level? For example over a 1000 miles should I epext to have to top the oil up?

Thanks in advance guys.....

Richie.

They let Rockapes drive Boxsters these days? I thought they only drove 964RS's...[:D]

Anyway, the vents are supposed to be different - the one on the passenger side (on RHD cars) is the air intake, the one on the driver side is an outlet for heat from the engine bay - there is a fan behind it to help extraction so don't be suprised to hear it sometimes.

The handbook states the permitted oil consumption, but I would expect not to have to top up between services.

Don't forget to ensure the plastic rear window does not kink when you lower it - that will help prevent splits.

You'll have fun in it, good luck [8D]

Yes, they are. If I have my left and right the correct way, the near-side should be recessed slightly to help with air intake and the off-side should be protruding to assist in hot air extraction.

And again yes. Over 1000 miles I would expect to put in 'None'.

If it were a new engine then it might take a little bit but on my previous Boxster I didn't need to top it up at all over a 3 year period.

Thanks guys.

Mark, I am an ex-Rockpe now, but still retained the mentality!! I am smoothing out the rear screen before putting it all the way down...they briefed me on that when I picked it up.

Treating the rear screen with Hindsight will keep it clear and supple, and reduces the risk of splitting

Hindsight is a wonderful thing [&:]

The lhs air intake should have a raised ridge round the forward facing part of the perimeter. This was a mod that was reported at the time. The reason given was that the raised ridge steered any streaming water around the intake and reduced the amount taken into the engine bay. Hence the lhs had the ridge and rhs did not. This feature will not be found on cars prior to 2000ish.

Oil consumption. I have had my 2001S from new it has done 31K miles. It has an annual oil change at the OPC and I have never had any need to top up at all between times. The level never noticably drops. For the record my car has the original RMS and has no leaks.
