Am I hearing things?

Standing outside the car today with the engine idling the sound of air rushing through the intake sounded a little bit louder than normal. I'm wondering if I've sprung a vacuum leak or if I've just not noticed it before? The only events leading up to this is that I took off and replaced the blower and ducting last weekend.

If anyone can let me know what sort of 'air sound' they get in the engine bay, I would be most grateful. I'll try and get a sound clip this weekend incase that helps.

what was your weather like at the time.... damp air sounds different.

I get more popping in this weather.

Must admit that the effect of humid air yesterday had crossed my mind and was making me paranoid. Will be taking a sound clip shortly.

Here's the sound clip:

engine noise

It's the sound of air being sucked into the engine that suddenly sounded odd...however it doesn't sound as loud as yesterday [&:]. It would be good to know from others if their's sounds similar.

Steve,

It definitely sounds strange - as you say, a vacuum leak or a gap in the induction tract. It sounds a bit I'd imagine it would sound with an open air filter. Does it sound more "roarty" when you accelerate??

Regards

Dave

Idles lovely (just did an oil change and had it idling for 15 minutes while waiting for thermostat to open and it didn't miss a beat). Seems as powerful as normal and no roaring or extra induction noise.

There's a split that has developed in the duct shroud but that doesn't seem to be the cause (no change when I cover it with my finger). And couldn't find any loose hose clamps.

So so far we're saying that noise of moving/sucking air is louder than others hear?

I took the right side intake manifold off today and had a root around looking for loose/split hoses and thought I'd found it when I found oil seeping from the rubber housing that the air flow meter is clamped into. The picture below shows the clamp - it's just to the right of the socket extension. Tightened it up but no difference. At least that's another minor leak fixed [8D].

p.s. I'll be the one at blenheim that keeps sticking my ear to your engine cover to compare noises [:D]

Steve,

did you ever resolve this one? I have a loud hissing sound similar to yours, seems to affect the half throttle performance i.e. surging/stuttering, but is fine at WOT.

will need to check all those little hoses again tonight....
