Am I mad?

So my RHD 964RS is sitting in the garage and looks lovely, is almost pristine (Total 911 feature car) and I love it to bits, but I am having lots of thoughts about selling it and replacing it with a GT3 RS as there are a few nice examples out there at the moment and they look fantastic.

Am I mad, sane or just needing to work harder and get the GT3 as well...

I really only use the car for the occasional road trip and trackday, nothing else.

If you had the choice what would you do?

Honestly, I would find someway to own both cars for the short term.....say 3 months, knowing that you would only keep the 1 car. If you sell the 64 and find you don't get along with the 996 after a while it will be difficult to find a rhd car in such good order. I think there is a strong chance you would miss the 964 more than you enjoy the kettle...nice decision to have to make though [;)]

Keep the 64 and add MOTEC for some extra horses!?

For some people, it would be the right move. For me, no. It depends what you want from a car. The biggest thing the GT3RS would give is more of a kick in the pants but I have ben there in terms of HP and if that is all it was about, I would not be driving the RS! The GT3RS is a very different experience and that is down to personal taste.

I wouldn't get the same buzz out of a GT3RS. It's a great car, but it lacks that totally uncomprimised statement that makes me smile every time I get in the 964RS. And I doubt Porsche would ever make such an uncomprimising car again.

Finally, I couldn't live with the depreciation on the GT3RS...............................................(ducks for cover [:D])

Personal choice at the end of the day. I have'nt driven one but i have pax'ed in a couple, similar in many ways to the 64 obviously quicker by the order of a few seconds or more (given like for like and same driver etc) and a bit newer. Personally don't think they are going to drop too much more for a while especially as the 97 is a different beast. Would i do it, NO. Why would i not? All it gives imho is greater speed and i am happy to own up to not managing to get everything out of my 64 and for me it would be 30k ish trade up. So back to personal choice. Would i have one if I was minted....yes but then i'd have row upon row of toys to play with, boo hoo[X(]

So Ollie

Why are you tempted?

Well Doctor it all started a few years ago when the GT3 kindly took me round Donnington and I fell in love with the silky power delivery of the engine, the noise and the linear handling/turn in.

Now I'm not saying the 64RS doesn't do it for me in those areas too, its just that now with the value of the car being what it is a GT3RS is not a massive step in terms of cost to change and it is a much newer car with a load more development.

I know its a nice dilema to have, my heart is saying keep the 64RS but I have a voice saying that the GT3 is one to keep too.

Could Noel provide a solution for Ollie and Jason's predicament (even if temporary)...?

Ollie,
I've owned my 993RS for over 8 years but in the last 3 years I've also owned 2 GT3RS's but although they are great cars their not the same as a proper aircooled lightweight RS[&:][&:]

Hence I sold them both[;)][;)]

Don't sell your RS for a kettle you'll regret it for ever[:(][:(][:(]

Thank you all for you insight and wisdom...

The little voice in the back of my mind has been silenced for the time being and a quick blast has confirmed that the edgy, rawness of the 64RS is something that a modern day car cannot replicate.

Long term view is that a GT3 will be added to the stable but not at the expense of the RS finding another home (hopefully).

Ollie I would certainly change for the less rewarding, soft, heavy, water booiler, accompanied by massive running costs, you can listen to the ICE, relax on long journeys, get out of the car refreshed after a track session and don't forget the Ann Summers disguised "umbrella holder" which can take most of the range.... there I go again "something for the weekend Sir?" about sums it up.

GT stands for Grand Tourer the RS was tagged on to sell the end of batch. They will do the same with the 997GT3RS and bring out the Mk2 3.8 GT3 RSR with DSG...sell now boys! You know "carreraboy" is always right.

You made the right choice. You were the guy who I met at a photoshoot for a 964 buyers guide in GT Purely Porsche at Bruntingthorpe werent you? If I recall you said that the guy who sold you the 64 RS also had a 93RS and contacted you afterwards so say he had sold the wrong car. Just thought I should remind you so you dont make the same mistake that he did [:)]

Neil Eldred
